§ 17.08.010. Generally.¶
For the purpose of this Code, the following terms shall have the meanings indicated in this chapter.
No attempt is made to define ordinary words which are used in accordance with their established dictionary meaning, except where the word has been loosely used and it is necessary to define its meaning as used in this Code to avoid misunderstanding. Singular shall include the plural unless it is clear from the text to the contrary.
Because the primary purpose is to define terms rather than words, the definitions are arranged alphabetically according to the first word of the term rather than the noun.

§ 17.08.020. Administrative authority.¶
"Administrative authority"
is the individual office, board, department or agency established and authorized by a state, county, city or other political subdivision created by law to administer and enforce the provisions of the swimming pool code as adopted or amended.

§ 17.08.030. Approved.¶
"Approved"
means accepted or acceptable under an applicable specification stated or cited in this Code, or accepted as suitable for the proposed use under procedures and power of the Administrative Authority.

§ 17.08.040. Approved testing agency.¶
"Approved testing agency"
means an organization primarily established for the purpose of testing to approved standards and approved by the Administrative Authority.

§ 17.08.050. Backwash piping.¶
"Backwash piping."

§ 17.08.060. Body feed.¶
"Body feed"
means filter aid fed into a diatomite-type filter throughout the filtering cycle.

§ 17.08.070. Cartridge filter.¶
"Cartridge filter"
means a filter using cartridge-type filter elements.

§ 17.08.080. Chemical piping.¶
"Chemical piping"
means piping which conveys concentrated chemical solutions from a feeding apparatus to the circulation piping.

§ 17.08.090. Circulating piping system.¶
"Circulating piping system"
means the piping between the pool structure and the mechanical equipment, and usually includes suction piping, face piping and return piping.

§ 17.08.100. Design head.¶
"Design head"
means the total head requirement of the circulation system at the design rate of flow and at the end of the normal filtration cycle.

§ 17.08.110. Design rate.¶
"Design rate"
means the average system flow rate in gallons per minute (G.P.M.) over the filtration cycle.

§ 17.08.120. Diatomite (diatomaceous earth).¶
"Diatomite (diatomaceous earth)"
is a type of filter aid.

§ 17.08.130. Face piping.¶
"Face piping"
means the piping, with all valves and fittings, which is used to connect the filter system together as a unit.

§ 17.08.140. Filter.¶
"Filter"
means any apparatus by which water is clarified.

§ 17.08.150. Filter aid.¶
"Filter aid"
means a nonpermanent type of filter media or aid such as diatomite, alum, etc.

§ 17.08.160. Filter cartridge.¶
"Filter cartridge"
means a disposable or renewable filter element which generally employs no filter aid.

§ 17.08.170. Filter element.¶
"Filter element"
means that part of a filter which retains the filter media.

§ 17.08.180. Filter media.¶
"Filter media"
means the fine material which entraps the suspended particles and removes them from the water.

§ 17.08.190. Filter rate.¶
"Filter rate"
means the average rate of flow per square foot of filter area.

§ 17.08.200. Filter rock.¶
"Filter rock"
means specially graded rock and gravel used to support filter sand.

§ 17.08.210. Filter sand.¶
"Filter sand"
means a specially graded type of permanent filter media.

§ 17.08.220. Filter septum.¶
"Filter septum"
means that part of the filter element in a diatomite-type filter upon which a cake of diatomite or other nonpermanent filter aid may be deposited.

§ 17.08.230. Filter waste discharge piping.¶
"Filter waste discharge piping"
means piping that conducts waste water from a filter to a drainage system. Connection to drainage system is made through an air break or other approved methods.

§ 17.08.240. Fresh water.¶
"Fresh water"
means those waters having a specific conductivity less than a solution containing 6,000 parts per million of sodium chloride.

§ 17.08.250. Inlet fitting.¶
"Inlet fitting"
means the fitting or fixture through which circulated water enters the pool.

§ 17.08.260. Main outlet.¶
"Main outlet"
means the outlet(s) at the deep portion of the pool through which the main flow of water leaves the pool when being drained or circulated.

§ 17.08.280. Pool depths.¶
"Pool depths"
means the distance between the floor of pool and the maximum operating water level.

§ 17.08.290. Portable pool.¶
"Portable pool"
means a prefabricated pool which may be erected at the point of intended use and which may be subsequently disassembled and reerected at a new location, and generally installed on the surface of the ground and without excavation.

§ 17.08.300. Precoat.¶
"Precoat"
means in a diatomite-type filter, the initial coating or filter aid placed on the filter septum at the start of the filter cycle.

§ 17.08.310. Receptor.¶
"Receptor"
means an approved plumbing fixture or device of such material, shape and capacity as to adequately receive the discharge from indirect waste piping, so constructed and located as to be readily cleaned.

§ 17.08.320. Return piping.¶
"Return piping"
means that portion of the circulation piping which extends from the outlet side of the filters to the pool.

§ 17.08.330. Saline water.¶
"Saline water"
means those waters having a specific conductivity in excess of a solution containing 6,000 parts per million of sodium chloride.

§ 17.08.340. Sand filter.¶
"Sand filter"
means a filter designed to be used with sand as the filter media.

§ 17.08.350. Separation tank.¶
"Separation tank"
means a device used to clarify filter rinse or waste water, and sometimes called a "reclamation tank."

§ 17.08.360. Skim filter.¶
"Skim filter"
means a surface skimmer combined with a vacuum diatomite filter.

§ 17.08.370. Suction piping.¶
"Suction piping"
means that portion of the circulation piping located between the pool structure and the inlet side of the pump and usually includes the following: main outlet piping, skimmer piping, vacuum piping and surge tank piping.

§ 17.08.380. Surface skimmer.¶
"Surface skimmer"
means a device generally located in the pool wall which skims the pool surface by drawing pool water over a self-adjusting weir.

§ 17.08.390. Swimming pool.¶
"Swimming pool"
means any constructed or prefabricated pool used for swimming or bathing, over 18 inches in depth.

§ 17.08.400. Swimming pool, private.¶
"Private swimming pool"
includes all constructed pools which are used as a swimming pool in connection with a single-family residence, and available only to the family of the householder and his private guests.

§ 17.08.410. Swimming pool, public.¶
"Public swimming pool"
means any swimming pool other than a private swimming pool. (See Title 17, California Administrative Code)

§ 17.08.420. Turnover time.¶
"Turnover time"
means the time in hours, required for the circulation system to filter and recirculate a volume of water equal to the pool volume.

§ 17.08.430. Vacuum fitting.¶
"Vacuum fitting"
means a fitting in the pool which is used as a convenient outlet for connecting the underwater suction cleaning equipment.

§ 17.08.440. Vacuum piping.¶
"Vacuum piping"
means the piping from the suction side of a pump connected to a vacuum fitting located at the pool and below the water level.

"Waste piping."

§ 17.08.460. Width and/or length.¶
"Width and/or length"
means the actual water dimension taken from wall to wall at the maximum operating water level.
