§ 14.40.010. Naming of City streets.¶
A. Whenever the City Council finds that the existing name of any public or private street should be changed, the City Council shall hold a public hearing on the proposed name for, or the change of name of, such street. Notice of such hearing shall be given by posting notice in at least three public places along the street or streets proposed to be affected, such posting to be completed at least 10 days before the day set for the hearing. Mailed copy of such notice shall also be provided to all owners of real property, as shown on the last equalized assessment roll, along the streets or streets proposed to be affected. At the time set for the hearing or at any time to which the hearing may be continued the City Council shall hear and consider proposals to adopt a name for, or change the name of, the street mentioned in the notice and objections to such proposal. At or after the conclusion of the hearing the City Council may adopt a name for, or change the name of, such street, and upon the adoption or change thereof shall make an order and file said order with the City Clerk officially designating the name for such street. Thereafter such street shall be known by the name so designated.
B. Whenever the City Council finds that any new public or private street should be designated with a name, the City Council shall hold a public hearing on the proposed name for such new street. Notice of such hearing shall be published one time in at least one newspaper of general circulation within the City's jurisdiction at least 10 days prior to the hearing.
C. The City Council may name any public or private street after any person, place, or thing that the City Council deems appropriate. The City Council shall not name any public or private street after any City official or employee, whether living or deceased, with the exception of the following individuals who lose their lives in the line of duty: "emergency response providers" as that term is defined in Section 2 of the Homeland Security Act of 2002 (6 USC Section 101(6)), members of the United States military, and similar public safety officers.
